Have you noticed how seldom people smile anymore or take the time to exchange niceties with others? Yesterday while waiting at the door of Sears there were three elderly ladies sitting on a bench and I was surprised when a well dressed business type young man entered and stopped to say "Good morning ladies, how are you today?". How nice was that!! Sometimes it takes so little to make someone's day a little happier.

Shopper vs Hunter - Set out this week to buy new livingroom tables. Shopping with himself is always an adventure as he is inclined to be more of a hunter - he seeks target, plans the hunt and goes for the kill in the shortest time possible. When I mentioned we would browse several stores in an area his looks bore the question "should I pack a lunch" Now getting him to go shopping is one thing, getting him to agree on anything is yet another mountain to climb. We differ like night and day on most things - if the item involves technology then he is game to go for whatever is new and exciting (not to mention complicated) - I am still trying to find out how to dry my clothes in the dryer we have had for over a year. After numerous "don't like" comments I spotted a set of tables that were marked down considerably. We were hesitant and decided to visit yet another store before making a decision - once there we noticed the same items at a much higher price so off we went back to the Brick. On our return there was another lady who was very interested in buying the set - we noticed some marks on the table but the saleslady told us they had another one exactly the same but not marked down and would sell it to us at the sale price - she went to check with the manager. On her return she and the other saleslady got into a heated discussion - the other lady wanted two end tables and decided to take one of ours but our saleslady stepped in and stated "YOU ARE NOT TAKING THAT TABLE". Anyway, we did get the set of tables at a very good price and we are both satisfied (that is an accomplishment on its own). Next "expedition" will be to purchase a rug for the basement after my blood pressure goes back to normal.

Margaret Trudeau Kemper feels "good" about being acquitted of drunk driving because her rights were violated. "Justice was served" - you have got to be kidding. Has she not been in the news several times before for speeding and driving while intoxicated? Would she still feel "good" if she had killed someone while she was intoxicated well over the legal limit. Where is your pride Margaret? What kind of lesson is she teaching her impressionable daughter - break the law just make sure you have a good defence lawyer. I rather think that even Pierre would not condone this type of behaviour. Margaret has been front and centre of late promoting her "do good" project called "WaterCan" which is a very good project providing clean water to underdeveloped countries - perhaps she should try drinking a little more of that "water".

Ottawa winter drivers - people suffering from vehicular selective seasonal amnesia syndrome. There is a title for almost everything these days.

My cousin in Scotland forwarded the following to me:

COMING SOON TO YOUR NEAREST WALMART
What you see below are not see-thru skirts. They are actually prints on
the skirts to make it look as if the panties are visible and these are the
current rage in Japan. They'll be the rage in the USA soon.
I forward this as a public service, so you won't have a heart attack when
the rage reaches the USA. What will they think of next??

On the Buses - Those who do not travel on the bus during the daytime are missing out on quite an adventure. First of all you need to think about what country you live in when you look around the bus. Yesterday I was so fortunate to sit behind a seedy looking man who from the conversation was just recently released from prison and had taken up with the rather ominous looking lady sitting beside him. The conversation was a good indication they did not have a brain cell between them. Another lady possibly in her late 60's who was really no gem was being entertained by a elderly man who was all over her like a wet suit and acted as if nobody else was around. To add to that a group of young folks with their pants hanging down around their knees and looked like they were from another planet were playing very loud rap music - loud thumping rap music just grates on every nerve in my body. The driver asked them to turn off the radio but they tended to ignore him so I was ready for a messy confrontation but after an forceful second request they reluctantly complied. On a lighter side I love to watch the little kids. One young man had two little kids (about 2 and 3) - he set a CD player between them and gave each one an ear plug - the looks on their faces was just precious. Most kids fall asleep on the bus and it is so interesting to watch how they just fade out so easily - one little girl was kneeling on the seat and looking out the window and she slowly drifted off without even falling over - now that is relaxation. What am I going to do for entertainment when the buses go on strike - I really do need to get a life!!

Read in the paper this morning they did a survey on the use of antibacterial soaps and the consensus was that they may contain toxins that could prove harmful especially to children - makes me wonder about all the kids who are carrying bottles in their packsacks!! Think people get too carried away with killing bacteria that in fact our bodies need to boost our immune system being ever aware of the fact that washing our hands with soap and water is wise and can prevent disease. It has also been pointed out that the automatic dryers are harbours for bacteria and when we dry our hand we are susceptible to more germs - oh! dear not more germs!! Another point that was brought up last week was that we have become clean freaks and taking showers every day is not a good thing - something to think about as years ago a Saturday night bath was the norm and depending on who had a bath last in the same water it was doubtful that you were too clean. I myself could not live without my daily showers but surveys have proven there are more skin conditions then ever before and there may be a connection.
On the topic of banning pesticides cannot believe why it has become so complicated - pesticides kill - what else do they need to know!! We once had our pond filled with fish and when they sprayed next door they all went belly up - do we need those kind of chemicals around our children??
Enough already, I shall digress for now.

TIME GOES BY - I had a great visit this week with a friend from the past who was visiting here with her husband from out west and we spent several hours remembering the good times and crazy things we did when we were young and foolish - I have not laughed so much in a long time - think we could have gone on for days but unfortunately our time was limited. Grace and I had not seen each other for 47 years so it was a rather emotional reunion and we were soon transformed back into the 50's once again. We were high school friends and after graduation we ventured to the big city of Ottawa. We were roommates at the Laurentian Detention Home for Wayward Girls (more formally known as Laurentian Terrace) for a couple of years. All six of us wayward girls went our different ways (myself being the only one to remain in Ottawa) and we lost contact over the years. I met up with four of the others a couple of years ago at a high school reunion (one had passed away) but Grace could not make it to the reunion. People tend to become so busy with their lives and families that they lose touch with friends which is understandable but as we grow older we realize that many years have been wasted. Photo of Grace and I has an inset from 1957. Grace%20old%20and%20new.jpgGrace%20visit%204.jpg
