Driveway: Still a mess! Oh, my heart! Waited all last week for someone to show. After another "not too polite" phone call on Friday they promised to show up on Monday morning - we shall see?

Lord tunderin' - Anyone see that guy speaking with a Newfoundland dialect in the commercial for Nissan - funny and even more peculiar is the fact that I can understand what he is saying!! This guy is from Cape Breton - who would have known that??

Update on driveway which was dug up a week ago and left in a mess:
Contractor was supposed to show last Fri to build forms and pour concrete but again did not show - hoped they would come this morning but by 10:00 there was no sign or no message from them. George called the company and left a message that "we are completely fed up with their company and if no "immediate" action is taken we will cancel the contract and go with another more reputable company to finish the job". Within a half hour we got a call telling us a concrete crew was on its way to our place and before I hung up the phone they were at the door. They were obviously ordered off another job they were working on and sent to our place. So, the curb is now in place and we hope in a couple of days to have the paving completed.

Things that go "beep" in the night and scare the puppy - when they came out with the law that every house should have a smoke alarm outside the sleeping area we decided to purchase one that has a sealed battery (guaranteed 10 years so they say) but after less than a year we were faced with a beeping sound last night which was most annoying and there was no way to turn it off other than to disarm it with a screwdriver and now we are faced with buying a new one - this time back to the removeable batteries - new and improved is not always the best at least it does not seem to be the case for us. We bought an outside light which was guaranteed to last five years and it lasted all of about 5 seconds before it died - perhaps we are jinxed - and speaking of which the
driveway (and neighbour's) still a "mess" with no indication when or if they are coming back to finish the job and they do not return our phone calls. My blood pressure went through the roof this week and I just want to cry every time I look outside!!!

I believe we may have used up our good luck with contractors during our kitchen renovation and other odds and sods we had done over the summer as we are now frustrasted with a non obliging paving company. We decided to hire a company we had one time before many years ago but did not realize there were two companies with a similar name. Two weeks after the date they were scheduled to do the job we started calling to leave messages with no response for about two weeks. Finally they called to notify us they were coming last Friday and after waiting all day they did not show up. A crew came on Monday morning and dug out the driveway and prepared for the new curb - left about noon and we waited for them to come back to complete the job - nobody appeared Monday afternon or on Tuesday so I called to find out when they might be back to finish the job and was told perhaps by the end of the week or sometime before midweek next week. Their price was rather high and are now wondering just when they might get around to complete the job and indeed what kind of a job they will do since they are not really concerned enough about their clients to even return phone messages or to inform their clients about their schedule. In the meantime we have a big mess not only in our driveway but also part of our new neighbours driveway has been dug out.

"Francisco Juarez bristles at being labelled Canada's first Afghanistan war resister. But the 35-year-old former army reserve member is proud to have turned his back on the military because he doesn't believe in the Afghan mission".
Finally someone with enough sense to speak out about the war in Afghanistan where our military personnel are dying every day for what purpose? Despite the noble intentions and military intervention Afghanistan remains a place of lawlessness and corruption and harvests the world's highest opium production. NATO is stretched very thin in Afghanistan, the pressure from the Taliban is increasing, there are equipment shortages - it's a real challenge for them to succeed. Canada has sent more troops to Afghanistan than France, Germany and Russia combined but at a time when NATO is calling for more troops the US is withdrawing its forces to be redeployed to Iraq??
Although I am not a NDP supporter I do agree with them in that our troops should be brought back home.
