Recycling
Saturday past was declared as a day to pass on items that are no longer of use and indeed to pick up items that might prove useful. A great environmentally friendly idea but unfortunately very few knew about this project and therefore it was not the success that it could have been. The city needs to publicize in the media and elsewhere the dates, etc and encourage folks to participate in this worthwhile endeavour. Himself and I struggled to carry out an old but workable TV to the curb and I was not encouraged with the fact that anyone would take it and we would have to retrieve it once again. We were surprised that only a half hour had passed when a couple were loading it in their van along with a practically brand new hammock with sunshade and pillow. They also took vertical drape slats but left the rod. We then decided to put out a microwave in good condition and it was gone within a few minutes. Pickings were pretty good at our place but I noted in the paper that a young girl eager to furnish her apt did not do so well, perhaps the fact that she did not venture out until mid-morning was a factor and most of the good things would have been picked over.

They say it is a good day when you learn something new:
"YOUTHQUAKE' is the Word of the Day and is defined as: "a shift in cultural norms influenced by the values, tastes, and mores of young people". I just knew there had to be a word to describe the behaviour of some of our youth today!!

Also learned I am not the only one who suffers from summertime blues nor am I alone in the fact that there are just some domestic duties I absolutely despise. Such chores get done but there are things I would rather be doing like "root canal". I am also not the only one who does not like to talk on the phone, would rather not answer calls and have to work up to returning messages. Despite what most folks say the warm-weather months can be more stressful. There are the decisions to make in regard to what you can wear and stay cool when gravity has taken over your entire body and any decision is now between your self-esteem and definitely your spider veins . What about the feet that you can hide all winter and nobody knows what lurks under those boots - pedicures are a definite summertime must in order to flip flop around for all the world to see what nail polish you are wearing and if it indeed the "colour" of this season. Then we must do something about tanning now that we are not to lay around in the sun and although chemistry has improved the fake tan ritual I am inclined to stay away from these lotions as I remember only too well the "orange" patchy tans of some years ago along with the toxic odor that following you around for days and remember the orange towels and bedclothes - no, I am not that vain anymore. Although all of the above preparation for summer concerns some of us there are those, OMG, well, we will not go there but the fact remains there are some sights to behold!!! Along, with the hot, smoggy and humid days when a breath of fresh cool air would be appreciated and would alleviate my allergies and staying cooped up inside with the air conditioning turned on full blast there is not a lot to cheer about in regard to summertime. But, I will survive with the thought that fall is only a short time away!!

Oprah, Brad, Madonna Have the Power; Paris Doesn't

You can bet that Oprah et al have made their share of mistakes like the rest of us but some people learn from their mistakes and some of us pay a high price for our mistakes before we learn to make smart choices - after all that is how we grow and mature!!! Continuting to repeat the same mistakes over and over again is just plain dumb. Can you believe Oprah made $260 million dollars last year?? "The rich get richer and the poor get poor" ain't it the truth.

Last visit to the hospital yesterday for my wrist - two hours for a 2 minute consultation!! But you do see some sights - talk about your reality TV. Anyway, I was worried as my wrist has been giving me trouble and I had visions of having it broke and reset (EGAD perish the thought) but I was informed with a break like mine it takes up to six months or more to heal - why did someone not tell me that before??

Everyone is getting on the bandwagon in regard to Her Highness Paris Hilton - I have absolutely no pity for her and her superior attitude. These young celebrities like Paris, Britany, Lindsey, Nicole, etc feel they can drink in excess, take drugs, act like deranged idiots and get behind the wheels of their expensive automobiles and nobody should touch them because of who they are, come on folks!! When one of them kills one or more innocent people which can easily happen will folks feel sorry for them then. It is time they realize that driving while intoxicated is a very "serious offence" and to totally ignore the fact that they have been charged with breaking the law and continue to behave in an obnoxious way deserves "consequences". It is time for Paris to grow up, act like an adult not like an immature spoiled child and take responsibility for her actions. It used to be at age 20 something you were expected to act like a mature adult - not so sure that is true anymore. Hopefully her time behind bars will encourage her to change her ways or perhaps the God she met in prison (strange how God comes into the picture when one is in dire straits) will help her realize she is not the only star in the universe. Lack of respect for the law and indeed for other people is becoming the norm and it is time good manners and respect become a priority once again. Like Dave Brown wrote "what kind of ignoramous needs to have the law brought down on them in order to act in a courteous and respectful manner"?? A couple of weeks or so in prison for Paris is very little time in her young life and she should be thankful that nobody was hurt because of her wrecklessness or that couple of weeks could have been a lifetime!!!

Had my chuckle for the day - a kid on TV appeared this morning wearing a T-shirt that said:

PARENTS
FOR SALE
Buy one, get one free.

It appears that OC Transpo are planning to help senior by offering free passage on Wednesdays which is a "good thing" but yet another peeve of mine is how disrespectful people are of others while riding the bus. Fines are to be imposed on people who do not give up their seats to disabled, seniors, pregnant women, etc. but there was an incident reported in the paper about a obviously pregnant woman who has to ride from Kanata on the bus and nobody will offer her a seat - she felt even more embarrassed when she asked the driver to have someone give up a seat and rather than ask someone to accommodate her he just ignored her request. Last week while boarding a bus I witnessed a large group of young folks rush to get on the bus and almost knocked down a very elderly man walking with a cane. I helped him to stay upright and led him onto the bus. This lack of respect is just unbelieveable not only on the bus but there is an every day lack of respect for others and their property, etc. I know us older folks tend to expound on manners, lack of respect, etc, etc but we did gain a bit of wisdom along the way, a quality little in demand these days. Young people tend not to listen to anyone let alone older folks thus "as youth is wasted on the young, so too is wisdom wasted on the aged!!
