Found this photo from Glace Bay - Cannot imagine how many safety rules would be broken these days!!!
The Picnic Train
During Miner's week the mining co. would load everyone onto the train and take them to Mira for a day of picnics, games and swimming. The S&L was a neighbourly and unpretentious railroad that operated on a personal basis that meant a lot to the people it served. The railroad ran picnic excursions, as seen in this photo, and 'blueberry specials' that would stop anywhere to let passengers off, and pick them up in the evening. It took little for a hunter or vacationer to flag the train and get on, and the crew always took a lively interest in the latest news along the line. Many times, often in foul weather and blizzards, the S&L sent out a locomotive and car to take a doctor somewhere, or bring someone into hospital. The men were tough, competent railroaders. In the early days, before air brakes, they spent many runs climbing over the icy tops of coal hoppers to brake the trains...and they moved an enormous amount of coal.

Always wondered when travelling about on the bus how many people chanced a free ride on the pop buses and if indeed one could travel free for long periods of time? Yesterday the OCT police boarded the bus and two young girls were taken off because they had no proof of purchase. A $3 fare cost them $150 or $300 for the two of them along with the embarrassment of being caught and taken off the bus. I noticed them waiting at the stop because they were scantly dressed on a rather cool day and eating ice cream cones (obviously their bus fare went to pay for the ice cream).

Finally we found a gazebo that fit our deck. Could not believe our luck after searching for months. Seek and ye shall find they say but I had given up ever finding one. Had my last physiotherapy session and now have eight weeks of an exercise program - it remains to be seen if I will follow through without someone cracking the whip??

Here's a whale of a tale - dey catch da big fish down in Glace Bay. This is the second whale to land on the Dominion Beach in the last year. They hope the tide will take it out to sea but like the last one it will just rot and smell to high heaven - Yuk!!!!!!

Had a nice mother's day this past Sunday. Kevin and Elaine along with grandchildren came for a visit and low and behold my prodigal son David appeared at the door with flowers no less - had not seen or heard from him in a long, long time. Thanks David - you made my day.
The other day while stepping out of the shower noticed a spider building a web from the ceiling to the ground - sat to watch and was amazed at the amount of work involved in building this intricate structure - okay I need to get a life BUT sometimes it is good for the soul to take the time to appreciate these fascinations of nature.
Note to Kevin - leave the poor squirrels alone or your mother will come after you - just remember you never outgrow the wrath that a mother can impose on her sons!!!!!

What is the difference between the Titanic and the Montreal Canadians??
They both look good until they hit the ice!!! Okay that's my chuckle for today.

Finally went out to buy a new mattress and box spring today - been putting it off for a long, long time and now I know why. It is quite an ordeal to choose from beds that are firm or not, have pillow tops or not, have separate numbers for comfort, electric positions, vibrators, heating, etc. etc. Then there are a lot of form mattresses that conform to your body and are all the rage these days. Brother Jack just bought one of those electronic sets with heat and vibration along with a remote - Nice, but I am afraid I would never get out of bed - just relax in comfort and call for room service - yea, in my dreams. We chose Sleep Country simply because they will take the old bed away and install the new one, also they wear hospital slippers over their boots to keep your floors clean - how great is that??
